    What makes raw manuka honey so unique?

    For centuries honey has been used for food and prized as medicine by various cultures around the world. Only recently has the effectiveness of manuka honey for medicinal use been linked to its potent antibacterial properties. Researchers in Australia have been investigating the unique therapeutic properties and benefits of Leptospermum honey and proven that Leptospermum honey is more effective than others at inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

    Manuka Honey is unique because of the unique compound Methylglyoxal or MGO. MGO is an international standard rating that refers to the level of naturally occurring methylglyoxal in Manuka honey. All honey has methylglyoxal but only Manuka has a very high amount of this antibacterial compound.

    NPA stands for non-peroxide activity, the property that makes certain grades of ULF and MGO manuka honey special. Those manuka honeys that carry only a ‘total activity’ or ‘peroxide activity’ rating do not have this special NPA property and should be considered low-grade honey.
